THE DOOR PANELS FROM A 6er

There are many different types of door panels through the years of the 6 series coupe, which makes this page a little confusing. Read it carefully and make sure you go cautiously in case the procedure I describe is not 100 percent for your car.
Start with the surround of the inner door handle, this slides rearwards, about 5 mm, and will then fall out in your hand.
On the driver's door, remove the mirror switch by gently prying around the edges. If it is located in the armrest, it will pull straight out far enough to unplug it. If the mirror switch is located in the door panel itself, very gently pry the rear edge out of the panel, then pull the switch out from the rear, the wiring connector on these switches is fragile, and it protrudes into the door opening, so you must pull it out towards the rear. Carefully disconnect the wiring.
If the mirror switch was mounted in the armrest, there is a screw behind it that must be removed next, along with the two screws along the rest of the armrest, provided you don't have a storage compartment in the armrest. If you do have the armrest compartment, open the lid and you will find up to 3 screws along the length of the armrest.
If the mirror switch is on the panel itself, you have a small chrome trim on the top of the pull handle section of the armrest. This trim is held in place by a screw that is inserted from below, make sure you remove this screw before you pry on the chrome trim or it will break. Once you remove the trim, remove the screw behind it.
Now it gets even more interesting. On early cars without the armrest compartment, there could be a series of very small Phillips screws around the outer edge of the panel, check carefully for these as they can be hard to spot, especially on black panels.
If you have the armrest compartment you do not have these screws. Once all screws are removed, pry the forward lower edge of the panel out with a screwdriver, it is held in by plastic clips that push into bushings mounted in the door panel. A small amount of force is required, but be careful not to bend the backing of the panel. Repeat the process around the lower section of the panel, older cars have the entire panel held on in this manner. On later cars, this panel only goes up to the bottom of the armrest. If the armrest has the storage compartment, it is a separate piece , and then the top section against the window is a third piece. Check for and remove the screws on the second and third pieces that appear as the first and second pieces are removed, if you can follow that.
Before the top section of the panel can be removed, you need to unscrew the black knob for the door lock.
This top section does not need to be removed for most repairs in the door.
