| Remove transmission
from car. |

| Place transmission on an appropriate stand. |
 |
| Engage 3rd gear. 3rd gear MUST be
engaged to remove front case section. |
| Remove bell housing if still attached. |
|
| Remove reverse light switch. |
|
| Pry out cap, do not allow spring, behind cap, to fly out. |
 |
| Remove spring and lock pin. Note orientation of lock pin, it
must be reinstalled in the same orientation. Wheel must be on horizontal
plane. |
 |
| Remove front cover/guide flange. Note bolt
positions. Different length bolts must not be interchanged. |
|
| Remove circlip on input shaft. |
 |
| Remove grooved washer. |
 |
| Drive pin towards rear of trans until it stops. |
 |
| Remove the ten 6mm Allen head bolts. |
 |
| Pull front case from transmission. If
necessary, place BMW special tool 23 1 170 on front of trans, use BMW
Special Tool 33 1 301 to pull front case from transmission. |
Installation:

|
| Position grooved washer so that groove faces circlip. |
|
| Heat input shaft bearing to approximately 175°F
(80°C) with a heat gun, before installing front case. |
|
